Ahtanum™ (YCR 1) is a versatile American aroma hop known for its distinct citrus (grapefruit), pine, and earthy profile. Bred by Yakima Chief Ranches, this low-to-moderate alpha acid (3.0% to 6.5%) hop offers a sweet, peppery aroma suitable for APAs, IPAs, and, when used lightly, pilsners.
Key Characteristics and Usage
Aroma / Flavour:
- Prominent grapefruit, geranium, citrus rind, and pine.
Alpha Acids:
- Low to Moderate (3.0% to 6.5%)
Usage:
- Best used in late boil additions or for dry hopping to maximise its delicate aroma, notes Charles Faram.
Substitutes:
- Cascade (similar aroma but more bitter), Willamette, or Amarillo.
